INSIDE CAMPUS WALLS

As I walked through the main gate headed to the administration block of Kenyatta university, I was extremely happy to have realized my dream of joining campus. Oblivious of the challenges that lay ahead of me, I settled in my new alocated room in Nyayo 4 hostel. Having moved in a new environment called for a adjustments like forming new friends and learning to get along others. The first and second year went by without any major problem apart from a few instances of getting lost within the compound. In one of my weird experiences inside campus, there was a time I was invited to a party and at the entrance was a lady holding a bottle of chrome. The requirement was to take a tot before getting inside the party. Peer pressure and desire to conform would not allow me to say no and that is how I tested alcohol.
My plight begun in my third year after I had my fisrt girlfriend. As many would attest to having a first love, the emotional bond was so strong that I could handle it when I realized that she had cheated on me. I almost lost track of my studies. I fell into stress and begun skipping classes followed bt a detoriation of my health notwithstanding my academics.
I was addicted to masterbation and despite knowing the ramifications of engaging in the excessive masterbation, I could not stop. I had all this softwares restrictions to access pornigraphic content but I found my self removing them. The struggle was getting the better part of me, distorting my view of reality often times mentally undressing female students in class. This was something I was not ready under any circumstance to share with any one.
It was during this time that I was introduced to Mentorship and Beyond, a mentorship program devoted to working with young people in doing ‘life’. It was here that I found a safe haven to come out and begun the process of healing.
Pornongraphy and Masturbation are just among many challenges that university students face while in campus and sometimes lack a listening ear. Having the courage of standing up and talking of the problem forms the foundation of the healing process. A change of mindset and environment are also key. The bible gives the the process of transformation or change in Romans 12:2, that we transform when we renewing our mind. Every action begins as a thought in our mind. Then the question os how to to renew the mind. After accepting that yes there is a problem that needs attention you now get down to learning more about it. For instance in 1Corithians 6: 19..our bodies are the temple of the holy spirit in us. This and many other verses help us change our mindset on how we view our bodies.
It is more of a process than a destination and it will take commitment to get you through. Like any other addictions like Alcohol, you should prepare to face the withdrawal symptoms which might range from wet dreams, erections and possible relapse but that is part of the journey. Walking the journey with a counsellor, friend or groups like M&B will help you keep track of your progress in the healing process. Online programs like “How Christ can save you from pornography – http://bible.com/r/3xS” have also been of great assistance.

PARENTING 201: CONTENT CONTROL

How much control do you have over the information your child consumes? Ranging from the internet sources, magazines, friend talks and many more. The parental control button on your remote or control software on the system is void if you do not have information control installed into your child’s mind-set. The problem is not access but rather what. The best way is to train the child on what information is good and bad so that they can select for themselves at an early stage rather that control what reaches them. Take a scenario where your 13 year old child has a phone or a laptop with internet access, obviously as a parent/guardian, you have locked all the irrelevant sites but on the outside this kid has friends (with phones) who have unlimited access and every time they meet they expose him to the material that you locked in your house.
When we were young our parents taught us that every woman the age of our mother is your mum and likewise for the male, growing up with this values made us grow up with respect and to this day the respect is still the same for all women. As a parenting technique, parents and guardians should begin as early as the children begins talking so that this values are installed in the mind of the child and they will be the controllers of what info is good or bad. This brings me to the best tool of content control ‘the mind’.
Then how do you shape your child’s mind? During the child’s development, they undergo several milestones of growth, both physical, emotional and cognitive developments. At age 3-5years the child is growing emotionally, being able to form friendship with fellow children, and relationship to grownups. They also, at this stage, develop language and ways of expression. This is a good age to train your child on the desired language, mode of expression and values (standards) of what is good or bad. For example, you let your child know that they should say ‘thank you’ whenever they are given something and sharing with others or sexual matters have an appropriate age of engagement.
Though they may be at an explorative age from 7yrs and parents should talk to them about the information they take in matters relating to sexual information and awareness. At this age they may have begun exploring their genitals and also be exposed to sexual content. Explaining to children about their bodies and steps to take to avoid getting the wrong information is an effective way to take charge of their mind-set which will in turn shape their behaviour. The same goes for freedom good for child development.
Considering the technological advancements and access of information, it may be hard to control the outside (environment) and thus the focus should be instilling this values and principles in the young mind as early as possible and then you can install the parental control software and the parental control button. Taking care of the cognitive part which controls the behavioural system.

Rehabilitation

As a process of healing, it refers to the restoration of good health after addiction. The lenghth of the rehabilitation process corresponds to the period of addiction. It is important to note that rehabilitation is more of a mental process as it is a physiological process. Before going through, a person needs to believe in the process, to have made the decision to go to a rehab. There have been cases of drug addicts who were hijacked into Rehabs only to finish the stipulated time and relapse, going back into the addiction.
So what happens in a rehabilitation center? What occurs in one rehabilitation center may varry from the other but generally the four stages a person undergoes during the rehabilitation process are Intake or admission, detoxification, rehabilitation and aftercare.
Intake is the initial process of admission where an addict begins the process of rehabilitation. Here an individual is assessed to determine the severity of the problem and the best treatment program normally done by Psychologist. The second phase of the process is Detoxification where after admission into the center, the substance is cleansed from the syatem and the effects of withrawal symptoms like Delirium Tremens, DTs (for Alcohol addicts) manged. It is normally a hard process that involves medical processes. For example in alcohol abuse rehabilitation, drugs like Benzodiazepines are used in the detoxification process. After successful removal of the substance from one’s system – detoxification, the person goes to the rehabilitation phase which at large involves intensive therapy sessions. Preparation of the life after. Some of the Therapies may include group therapy between the people (addicts) facilitated by a psychologist, self therapy by the individual reflecting on personal life, triggers and other aspects of life that might have led to misuse. Family therapy involving family members to discuss the immediate family, and other family related issues like stress or dysfunctions that may have caused or have a potential of causing misuse. All these therapies are geared towards the full recovery of the addict.
Lastly is the aftercare or post rehab, here a person continues with the therapies to make full recovery. Some may be required to undergo regular drug taste to keep account of themselves while others have a a special schedule to follow. While there is no standard time to say that the rehabilitation process is complete, the four phases are crucial in the restoration. Some of the rehabilitation centers in Nairobi are New Life Rehabilitation Thome, Nairobi Place Addiction center, Shauri Moyo Boys Rehabilitation center, Nairobi Outreach Services Trust.

Alcohol Use and Misuse

ALCOHO ABUSE
This is the most commonly abused drugs and it not a surprise as you walk along any street to spot two or three bars selling alcohol. As discussed earlier, alcohol abuse can be influenced by peer pressure. Borrowing from my life experience when I was in campus, I got invited to this party of friends, from the fear of “being left out” I accepted. At the party, every participant was required to gulp a tot of beer, this was my first experience of alcohol. This was the idea of my then best friend, how could I say no! I accepted to take the tot but the bitterness as it settled on my tongue could not allow me to swallow it, I dashed to the washroom. Such are stories of how many youth got introduced to drinking alcohol and strong is the Peer pressure that saying no is almost not a possibility.
Others drink to deal with stress from work, family and even disasters like loss of a loved one. As an escape route from grief, the deceased resolves to alcohol abuse for it makes them forget the problems, at least for a little while.
A small percentage enter through the curiosity door similar to those that begin on the curiosity lane. The effect of media is vast on the lifestyle. From movies to programs and adverts in cinemas, TVs and social media. Youth learn of the coolness of drinking, celebs posing/drinking the expensive kinds of alcohols attracts them into the habit. Modelling (learning by observation) also contributes to the development of such habits.
Talking to most people I know who drink admitted to have begun drinking knowing it is under control only to find themselves in “I will stop tomorrow” situation. It begun with one bottle, stepped up to two and later four, the previous quantity is not enough to get give the arousal effect a phenomenal called – Tolerance. The bond is so strong that the individual drinks despite prior knowledge to the Psychological and Physiological effects of the habit. The continuous abuse of alcohol can result in liver cirrhosis, throat cancer and colon but m focus is on the Psychological effects.
The level of effect is dependent on the time of abuse, the longer the abuse the severe the effects. Some of the psychological effects include; frequent difficulties focusing, distorted motor coordination, vision impairment and difficulty remembering. Prolonged abuse of alcohol may result in dependency, decreased learning and memory depression and increase levels of anxiety and in pregnant mothers it interferes with brain development of the foetus.
Addicts need urgent help and people who are close to them are advised to recommend or take them to nearest Rehabilitation centers. The sooner an addict is taken to a rehab the lesser the impact of the negative effects.

Alcohol and Substance Abuse

Drug abuse among the youth is a serious problem in Kenya with a survey in 17 counties by NACADA showing alcohol the most used and prescription drugs like painkillers the most accessible. An individual is addicted to alcohol and substance abuse when he/she can’t function normally without the substance, a scenario called dependency. Addiction can also be characterized by efforts or a deep to desire to stop the use the drug. As a result of the prolonged use, dependency kicks in and you will hear of people saying “ntakuwa sawa nkivuta kiac” – I will be ok after I smoke a little or a teacher with trembling hands will have to drink before gaining the steadiness to write on the board.
This is an admission of dependency or rather addiction. The chemical process that happens in an addict’s body to case the dependency I leave to the Bio-Chemists. Some of the common drugs people are addiction include Alcohol, Bhang, Cocaine, Heroin, and Tobacco. People can also be addicted to gambling, Pornography.
There are various reasons why youth get into Alcohol and substance abuse and this may include the following; peer pressure from friends, media influence and modelling, availability of the drugs, curiosity or experimentation “nlitaka kjua Bangi inaonja aje”- I wanted to know how Bhang tastes. In other cases, youths finds themselves in drugs as a compensation of lack of social skills, anxiety and depression. In rare cases, the abuse of drugs may be hereditary. The ramifications of the abuse may range from Psychological effects like impaired judgment, aggressive behavior and lack of emotional connection and memory problems. Physiological, the abuse of drugs may result in damage of internal organs like lungs for Tobacco and liver (cancer) for the alcohol abuse.

Introduce Yourself (Example Post)

This is an example post, originally published as part of Blogging University. Enroll in one of our ten programs, and start your blog right.

You’re going to publish a post today. Don’t worry about how your blog looks. Don’t worry if you haven’t given it a name yet, or you’re feeling overwhelmed. Just click the “New Post” button, and tell us why you’re here.

Why do this?

  • Because it gives new readers context. What are you about? Why should they read your blog?
  • Because it will help you focus you own ideas about your blog and what you’d like to do with it.

The post can be short or long, a personal intro to your life or a bloggy mission statement, a manifesto for the future or a simple outline of your the types of things you hope to publish.

To help you get started, here are a few questions:

  • Why are you blogging publicly, rather than keeping a personal journal?
  • What topics do you think you’ll write about?
  • Who would you love to connect with via your blog?
  • If you blog successfully throughout the next year, what would you hope to have accomplished?

You’re not locked into any of this; one of the wonderful things about blogs is how they constantly evolve as we learn, grow, and interact with one another — but it’s good to know where and why you started, and articulating your goals may just give you a few other post ideas.

Can’t think how to get started? Just write the first thing that pops into your head. Anne Lamott, author of a book on writing we love, says that you need to give yourself permission to write a “crappy first draft”. Anne makes a great point — just start writing, and worry about editing it later.

When you’re ready to publish, give your post three to five tags that describe your blog’s focus — writing, photography, fiction, parenting, food, cars, movies, sports, whatever. These tags will help others who care about your topics find you in the Reader. Make sure one of the tags is “zerotohero,” so other new bloggers can find you, too.
